Online and Personal

Find out why our online classes are different!

By Caroline Preston - Academic Director

During this unexpected and difficult time have all been faced with incredible challenges. At International House Newcastle we have had no choice but to switch to online teaching. Our mission has been to work out the best way to do this whilst keeping our values, nurtured by face to face teaching. With intense planning from the team, we have devised a model of asynchronous and synchronous learning, which not only offers an alternative for our current face to face students, but also provides an excellent model to take forward into a post Covid-19 world. We are determined to maintain the personal touch, which is achievable by regular group classes via Zoom.

Students are placed into these classes according to their CEFR level by means of a placement test and personal virtual speaking interview. One of the known advantages of online learning is having a flexible timetable and we have achieved this by providing each student with a Net Languages course at their level. This can be worked through asynchronously at the student’s own pace and at the time of day which suits their learning style! Whilst Zoom classes, based on Net Languages course materials, give the students that all important interaction; using breakout rooms and sharing screens, to offer a viable alternative to face to face classes. We have taken the personal touch one step further by offering a 30 minute 1:1 session per week to every online student plus regular tutorials from the Academic Director .

We are proud of the hard work put in by the team to move forward at this time of global uncertainty.
