INTERNATIONAL HOUSE CURRICULUM AND TEACHING CODE 

 1.    International House Newcastle (IH Newcastle) provides a good learning environment (premises, classrooms, facilities, and resources and an efficiently organised range of courses appropriate to the learning needs of the clients. The maximum class size is 12 unless specifically agreed otherwise with the client.

2.    IH Newcastle employs its teachers as professionals whose qualifications are appropriate for a high quality language institute and their primary responsibility is to the language learning needs of the clients.

3.  IH Newcastle employs an Academic Director and Director of Studies responsible for teaching standards and for the administration and supervision of all teaching programmes.

4.    IH Newcastle holds teachers' meetings or seminars at least once a month as part of our commitment to in service training. All teachers agree to regular observation of their teaching by the IH Newcastle's senior educational staff, by colleagues or trainee teachers for the purposes of teacher development and training, and by inspectors and visitors during its regular inspections and advisory visits.

5.    IH Newcastle makes appropriate arrangements for extracurricular learning, cultural and social activities for students.

6.  IH Newcastle ensures that adequate arrangements are provided for the welfare, health, insurance and safety of all staff and clients.

7.  IH Newcastle takes all reasonable steps to ensure that the terms and conditions of employment for all teachers are in accordance with national or local employment regulations.

The International House Curriculum

 

 We want International House clients to realise their full individual potential and believe this happens when: 

·  they are actively involved in their learning;

·  they are challenged by what they are asked to do;

·  they are motivated by their studies

International House teachers are expected to: 

·  hold appropriate professional qualifications; 

·  engage in on-going professional development;

·  respect their clients as learners and as individuals;

·  be interested in their clients and care about their progress;

·  encourage their clients to participate in class and continue their studies outside class;

·  take the opinions of their clients seriously;

·  know their subject and be able to clarify details for clients;

·  correct their clients appropriately;

·  be well-informed and sensitive to cultural issues;  

·  be able to use both modern and more traditional teaching methods effectively;

·  make appropriate use of available technology;

·  make every lesson a worthwhile learning experience for their clients.

Our clients can expect International House teachers to:

 

·  introduce them to new language; 

·  provide them with opportunities to practise new language;

·  give them guidance on how to improve their language level;

·  encourage them to participate in their language of study in the class;

·  help them become more confident about using their language of study;

·  develop their ability in speaking, listening, reading and writing;

·  assess their level, their progress and their language skills;

·  use up-to-date material from a wide range of sources;

·  use a wide range of activities and techniques to activate their language of study;

·  manage their classes effectively and involve all clients fairly and equally.

We will encourage our clients to:

 

·  share responsibility for their own learning;

·  show respect for each other, their teachers and their school;

·  participate actively in class and respond positively to the challenges of language learning.
